All world championships have symbols representing the spirit of competition: the Olympic Torch, the Stanley Cup. The FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship has its ‘Sacred Scroll’, which promotes clean water, healthy living, and good sportsmanship.
The Town of Vail will host more than 30 countries to the Vail Valley for the 36th annual FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship, September 11-18, 2016. Fishing will be on the Eagle River, Colorado River, Blue River, Sylvan Lake, and Dillon Reservoir. Wild trout and the iconic beauty of the Rocky Mountains will welcome these international guests.
Message: “We are sending our message in a traditional birch bark holder to the next organizer and country. A fly fisher lives with and for nature. Where the habitat is good for fish, it is good for people also. It is as simple as that. Our message is: Take care of the environment, and enjoy your fly fishing. Best wishes for the next World Championship in Fly Fishing.”
US Organizer and Vail resident John Knight attended the 2015 championship in Jajce, Bosnia and accepted the Sacred Scroll and championship to the United States. The Closing Ceremony will see the Sacred Scroll passed to the 2017 organizers from Liptov, Slovakia. The scroll is notated on by each Organizer stating best wishes on a successful championship.
The case and lid for the Sacred Scroll are made of birch bark and the spike at the end is for pushing into a wooden door – how ancient Norse hamlets would pass messages along. The Sacred Scroll’s case was recently repaired by Vail local, Helmut Fricker, and he made the leather box that it will now travel in from country to country.
